The Dental Laboratory Apprenticeship Program, offered by Helping Hands of Tennessee, is an innovative career pathway designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field of dental technology. This comprehensive program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training, providing participants with a unique opportunity to launch a rewarding career in an in-demand healthcare sector.
The program is structured in two phases: a 3-month Pre-Apprenticeship and an 18-month Apprenticeship. The Pre-Apprenticeship phase, running from September 4 to December 15, 2024, introduces participants to the fundamentals of work ethics, dental laboratory terminology,Microsolf Office certification, and OSHA 10 certification with a classroom setting. Upon successful completion of this initial phase, participants receive a Pre-Apprenticeship Certficate.
The Apprenticeship phase, spanning from January 8, 2025, to June 30, 2026, offers an immersive learning experience. During this period, apprentices will accumulate a total of 2,000 credit hours, combining their pre-apprenticeship hours with on-the-job training. This phase provides invaluable hands-on experience in dental laboratory techniques, including impression-taking, fabrication of crowns, bridges, and dentures, and the use of cutting-edge CAD/CAM technology.
Throughout the program, participants benefit from a range of support services, including case management, counseling, and assistance with work-related needs such as clothing and tools. The program also offers job counseling and wrap around support through community partnerships, ensuring that participants can fully focus on their training and career development.
One of the most attractive aspects of this program is its financial support. Apprentices receive stipends totaling over $15,000 per year, making it a viable option for those seeking to change careers or enter the workforce. Additionally, the program provides industry-recognized certifications, including the opportunity to become a Certified Dental Laboratory Technician and obtain OSHA 10 certification.
Upon successful completion of the program, participants are guaranteed job placement, launching them into a stable and well-paying career in the dental industry. This guarantee, coupled with the comprehensive training and certifications, positions graduates for long-term success in a growing field.
The Dental Laboratory Apprenticeship Program is made possible through grant funds from the State of Tennessee Families First Funding, reflecting a commitment to workforce development and economic opportunity. It's open to individuals who meet specific income and family size criteria, with a minimum age of 18 (16-17 with parental consent). Education: While a high school diploma or GED is preferred, it is not mandatory. We welcome applicants with various educational backgrounds.

Participating in the Dental Laboratory Apprenticeship Program is an exciting opportunity, but it also comes with responsibilities. To ensure the success of all participants and maintain the integrity of the program, we have established a set of rules that all apprentices must follow.
First and foremost, attendance is crucial. We require a minimum attendance rate of 85% for all scheduled classes, workshops, and on-the-job training sessions. This high attendance rate is essential for mastering the skills and knowledge needed to become a proficient dental laboratory technician. If you anticipate any absences, you must notify your instructor or supervisor in advance. Excessive absences may result in removal from the program.
Punctuality goes hand-in-hand with attendance. Arriving on time demonstrates respect for your instructors, fellow apprentices, and the program itself. Consistent tardiness will be addressed and may impact your standing in the program. We understand that life can be unpredictable, so if you're running late, please communicate with your instructor or supervisor as soon as possible.
Maintaining professional conduct is another cornerstone of our program. This includes treating all instructors, staff, and fellow apprentices with respect and courtesy. We expect you to use appropriate language, dress professionally, and adhere to all safety protocols. Remember, you're training for a professional career, and developing these habits now will serve you well in your future workplace.
Academic integrity is non-negotiable. All work submitted must be your own. Plagiarism, cheating, or assisting others in academic dishonesty will result in disciplinary action, potentially including dismissal from the program. If you're struggling with any aspect of the coursework, we encourage you to seek help from your instructors or mentors rather than resorting to dishonest practices.
The program includes both classroom learning and hands-on training. You're expected to complete all assigned coursework, projects, and practical exercises within the given timelines. This includes reading assignments, written work, and practical skill demonstrations. Falling behind can impact not only your progress but also the flow of the entire program, so it's crucial to stay on top of your work.
Safety is paramount in a dental laboratory setting. You must follow all safety guidelines and use protective equipment as instructed. This includes wearing safety glasses, gloves, and other protective gear when working with materials or equipment. Failure to adhere to safety protocols can result in immediate dismissal from the day's activities and potentially from the program if violations are repeated.
We provide various support services to help you succeed, including case management, counseling, and assistance with work-related needs. We expect you to take advantage of these services when needed and to communicate openly with your assigned case manager about any challenges you're facing that might impact your participation in the program.
Lastly, remember that you're part of a learning community. We encourage collaboration and peer support, but this should never cross the line into doing work for others or allowing others to do your work. The goal is for each apprentice to master the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in dental laboratory technology.
By following these rules, you'll not only ensure your success in the program but also develop the professional habits that will serve you well throughout your career. We're committed to your success and believe that adhering to these guidelines will help you make the most of this valuable opportunity.
